Mumbai, August 20: HDFC Bank said on Wednesday it has invested in CoRover, the conversational AI company that developed BharatGPT, a sovereign and enterprise-grade large language model (LLM) built entirely in India. The size of the investment was not disclosed.

CoRover, which has a reported user base of one billion and works with more than 25,000 enterprises and developers, builds conversational AI agents including chatbots, voicebots and videobots powered by BharatGPT. The model is designed to be multilingual, multimodal and adaptable to specific domains.

Arup Rakshit, group head of treasury at HDFC Bank, said CoRover’s strength lay in addressing India’s linguistic diversity. “Development of BharatGPT, which enables exchange of information in multiple Indian languages for a diverse country like India, set apart CoRover for us,” he said.

CoRover founder and chief executive Ankush Sabharwal said the partnership underscored a joint commitment to building AI that is “sovereign, secure, inclusive and capable of scaling across India’s most critical sectors.”

The Bengaluru-based company recently launched BharatGPT Mini, a version designed to operate on low-end devices and without internet connectivity, expanding access in infrastructure-limited environments.

The investment also ties into India’s policy push through the IndiaAI Mission, under which CoRover participates in the IndiaAI Startups Global Accelerator Programme in partnership with Station F and HEC Paris.
