New Delhi, July 25: Delhi Police have invoked the charge of attempt to murder in one of the cases linked to the violence that erupted during the “Chalo Sansad” protest in the national capital earlier this week, officials said on Saturday.
The protest, organised on the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, drew thousands of demonstrators, many of them students and young people, who gathered to voice concerns over alleged irregularities in the NEET medical entrance examination and to demand accountability from the Union government.
According to police, demonstrators attempted to march towards the Parliament complex despite restrictions imposed in the area.
Clashes broke out after security personnel stopped the crowd at multiple barricades, leading to stone-pelting, scuffles, and damage to public property.
Police used tear gas and baton charges to disperse the gathering and restore order.
Officials said the latest First Information Report (FIR), registered at Kartavya Path Police Station, includes charges under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including attempt to murder, assault on public servants, obstructing government officials from performing their duties, unlawful assembly, rioting, and causing damage to public property.
The case relates to the violence reported near Rail Bhavan on Rafi Marg, close to the Parliament complex.
Police said personnel deployed for security responded after receiving reports of a large crowd attempting to breach barricades in the high-security zone.
Authorities stated that 129 police personnel, including senior officers, sustained injuries during the clashes. Around 60 protesters were also reported injured.
So far, Delhi Police have registered 10 FIRs in connection with the incidents at different police stations across central Delhi.
One of the cases was filed following allegations that a Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel was assaulted during the confrontation.
Investigators are examining CCTV footage, video recordings, and witness statements to identify those involved in the violence.
Police said further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
The organisers of the protest have not issued a detailed response to the latest charges at the time of filing this report.
