Motihari, Dec 25: A joint team of the Bihar Police and the Special Task Force (STF) arrested three drug traffickers from Bihar’s East Champaran district and recovered 7.5 kg of charas from their possession, police officials said on Wednesday.

The arrests were made late Tuesday night during a checking drive conducted under the jurisdiction of Haraiya police station, following a specific tip-off about the movement of drug suppliers.

The accused were apprehended near the Pantoka border. The arrested persons have been identified as Chand Miyan, a resident of Motihari in East Champaran, Riyaz Khan, a resident of West Champaran district, and Ayush Das, a resident of Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.

Police said that Chand Miyan and Ayush Das have previous cases registered against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the trio was part of an inter-state drug supply network operating across several states, including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Gujarat.

So far, six individuals have been booked in connection with the case, while three others are still absconding. According to the police, a Nepali national identified as Pradeep Tamang and Mehboob Miyan of Raxaul have long been involved in drug smuggling activities.

Further investigation is underway. Meanwhile, security agencies have intensified surveillance along the Indo-Nepal border, which is often exploited by drug traffickers and those involved in the smuggling of counterfeit currency into Indian territory.
