New Delhi, July 23: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday announced that Bihar has become the first state in the country to ensure no polling station has more than 1,200 electors, following the addition of 12,817 new polling stations across the state.

With the latest additions, the total number of polling stations in Bihar has risen to 90,712. The move is part of a broader effort under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, aimed at easing voter access and reducing overcrowding during elections, the Commission said in a statement.

“This major achievement of Bihar is to be followed by other States and Union Territories,” the ECI said, calling the development a benchmark for electoral accessibility and inclusiveness.

The poll panel also provided an update on the ongoing voter enumeration process. Out of an estimated 7.89 crore electors in Bihar, the Commission has received enumeration forms from 90.67%, or 7.16 crore voters. Of these, around 7.08 crore forms have already been digitised.

However, the Commission noted that forms from about 29.62 lakh electors are still pending, and 43.93 lakh electors were not found at their registered addresses. Lists containing the details of these individuals have been shared with political parties to ensure no eligible voter is excluded.

Election officials, including Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs), District Electoral Officers (DEOs), Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), and Booth Level Officers (BLOs), have been instructed to operate in “mission mode” to complete the process ahead of the publication of the draft electoral roll on August 1, 2025.
