Guwahati, Jan 5: Assam may soon witness another round of high-profile Central leadership visits, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah likely to travel to the state later this month, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday.

Interacting with reporters, Sarma said the state government has formally invited both leaders, though the final schedules are yet to be confirmed. “We have invited the Honourable Prime Minister on January 17 and 18, and the Honourable Home Minister Amit Shah on January 29,” he said, adding that there is a strong possibility of both visits taking place in January.

While awaiting official confirmation, the Chief Minister noted that such back-to-back visits would underline Assam’s growing importance on the national political and development map, especially at a time when several major infrastructure and policy initiatives are underway in the state.

The anticipation follows a busy December marked by multiple visits from the Central leadership. On December 21, Prime Minister Modi was in Assam to lay the foundation stone for a Rs 10,601-crore brownfield ammonia-urea plant in Dibrugarh district, a project expected to strengthen fertiliser production and benefit farmers across the region.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the state shortly after, on December 29, to inaugurate the Jyoti-Bishnu Antarjatik Kala Mandir in Guwahati. The auditorium, the largest of its kind in the Northeast, has been projected as a major cultural landmark and a boost to public infrastructure in the state.

Officials said details of the proposed January visits, including programmes and venues, would be announced once confirmation is received from the Centre. Until then, preparations are being kept on standby, reflecting the state’s readiness to host another round of high-level engagements.
