Guwahati, October 9: The Assam Police on Wednesday arrested Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sandipan Garg, cousin of late singer Zubeen Garg, in connection with the artist’s death in Singapore last month, officials said.
“This is the fifth arrest in the case. We have arrested Sandipan Garg. Now, we are doing the necessary legal formalities,” CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta told reporters. The officer was taken into custody after being interrogated several times over the past few days, he added.
Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most popular cultural icons, died on September 19 after reportedly drowning while swimming in the sea in Singapore, where he had travelled to attend the 4th edition of the North East India Festival. According to officials, Sandipan Garg was present with the singer at the time of the incident. He has been produced before a local court, and investigators plan to seek his police remand.
Earlier, four others — festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer’s manager Siddharth Sharma, and band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amrit Prabha Mahanta — were arrested in connection with the case and remain in police custody.
The investigation, led by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam Police, is examining the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death, which has sparked widespread public attention and demands for accountability.
