Guwahati, Aug. 6: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday thanked the Vantara Foundation and its founder, Anant Ambani, for extending support to the state’s wildlife rescue efforts amid the ongoing flood crisis.The Chief Minister said the floods have severely affected both livestock and wildlife across Assam, with more than 10 lakh livestock impacted and hundreds of wild animals either swept away, stranded or reported missing.
He noted that while the Assam Forest Department has been carrying out extensive rescue and relief operations, the scale of the disaster has created a need for additional assistance.
To strengthen the ongoing efforts, the Vantara Foundation has deployed specialised wildlife rescue teams along with ambulance services, which will work under the supervision of the Assam Forest Department. The additional support is expected to help rescue, treat and rehabilitate animals affected by the floods.
Sarma said the plight of animals during natural disasters often receives less attention than human relief efforts and appreciated the organisation for contributing to wildlife conservation during the emergency. He also expressed gratitude to Anant Ambani for facilitating the assistance.
Meanwhile, the flood situation in Assam remains critical. According to official reports, six more people lost their lives on Wednesday, taking the death toll in this year’s monsoon season to 95.
The floods have affected several districts, causing extensive damage in both rural and urban areas.The state government has intensified relief measures and is operating 45 relief camps, where more than 12,000 displaced people are currently taking shelter.
Rescue and rehabilitation operations are continuing across the affected regions as authorities work to provide assistance to both residents and wildlife impacted by the floods.
