Amravati, September 19: The monsoon session of the Andhra Pradesh Legislature will begin on Thursday, with the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government expected to table several key bills and present a report on its first year in office, even as the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) signalled it may boycott proceedings.
The Assembly is scheduled to convene at 9 a.m. and the Legislative Council at 10 a.m., starting with Question Hour followed by a Business Advisory Committee meeting to finalise the session’s agenda.
Speaker Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu urged YSRCP legislators to attend, stressing it was their responsibility to raise constituency concerns in the House. “By attending the House, every member will be given the chance to speak on the people’s problems,” he said, adding that timely answers during Question Hour were essential for transparency.
The state government plans to introduce bills repealing the NALA Act, establishing 10 new medical colleges under a public-private partnership model, rolling out a universal health card, tackling social media misinformation, and regularising unauthorised constructions.
Meanwhile, the YSRCP, which holds 11 seats, has demanded recognition as the principal opposition party, a status the NDA has rejected, citing rules requiring at least 15% of the Assembly strength. Party leader Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has challenged the decision in the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
Authorities have put in place elaborate security measures around the Secretariat, including drone surveillance, rooftop monitoring, bomb disposal squads, and strict access controls. Traffic police will be deployed to manage congestion and ensure smooth movement of senior officials and lawmakers.
