Mumbai, Feb 05 : Wedding expenses in India have spiked in 2024, with average costs rising by 14% to ₹32-35 lakh, compared to ₹28 lakh in 2023. This surge, marking a 28% rise since 2022, reflects the growing demand for more personalized and experience-driven weddings, according to a report from WeddingWire India.
The rising expenses are linked to evolving wedding preferences, with couples opting for larger, more elaborate celebrations. Weddings with over 300 guests have increased by 16.29% in 2024, showcasing a trend toward bigger gatherings. At the same time, weddings with fewer than 100 guests have risen by 26.66%, suggesting a shift towards more intimate ceremonies. The average guest list for weddings in 2024 stood at 119, up 6.25% from the previous year.
The growing demand for more unique and personalized weddings is also evident in the choice of venues. While traditional wedding destinations like Jaipur, Goa, and Udaipur continue to dominate, emerging locations such as Nainital, Dehradun (Uttarakhand), and Wayanad (Kerala) are becoming increasingly popular. These locations offer a blend of luxury and exclusivity, attracting couples seeking serene settings and memorable experiences.
In addition to the location changes, weekday weddings are seeing a rise in popularity, driven by cost advantages and greater availability. Mondays and Tuesdays are emerging as preferred days for many couples, offering more flexible pricing compared to weekends. Sundays have also gained traction, as families are no longer restricting themselves to auspicious days for weddings.
November continues to be the most favored month for weddings, accounting for 18.5% of all weddings in 2024. Winter months, especially November, December, and February, remain the prime wedding season due to cooler weather, which is seen as the ideal setting for such grand celebrations.
The Indian wedding industry is showing strong growth, expanding at a rate of 7-8% annually. The sector crossed $75 billion in 2023-24 and is expected to generate ₹4.25 trillion in revenue during the wedding season from November to December 2024. This growth is fueled by the rising trend of high-budget weddings and the demand for more customized experiences.
“The wedding industry in India has experienced a significant shift in 2024, with couples embracing more personalised, intimate, and high-budget weddings,” said Virginia Cánovas, Senior Director of Consumer Marketing at WeddingWire India. “We’ve seen a surge in demand for both traditional and offbeat wedding destinations, as well as a growing interest in weekday weddings.”
The peak wedding season in India, which spans from November to March, is expected to see around 10 million weddings annually, as per industry estimates. The cooler weather remains a crucial factor for many couples when selecting wedding dates, contributing to the steady rise in winter weddings.
