Mumbai, Feb 05 : Shantanu Naidu, a close confidant of the late industrialist Ratan Tata, has been appointed General Manager and Head of Strategic Initiatives at Tata Motors. Naidu announced the appointment in a heartfelt LinkedIn post, reflecting on his family’s deep connection to the Tata Group. “I remember when my father used to walk home from the Tata Motors plant, in his white shirt and navy pants, and I would wait for him in the window. It comes full circle now,” he wrote, sharing a photo of himself with a Tata Nano.

Naidu’s family has long-standing ties to the Tata Group, with his father working at the Tata Motors plant in Pune and his grandfather and great-grandfather employed at the Tata Power hydroelectric project in Bhira, Maharashtra. Prior to this role, Naidu worked at Tata Trusts, where he was compensated by Tata Sons. His salary was moved to Tata Motors in January 2025, signaling his transition to the automaker.

Naidu served as Ratan Tata’s Executive Assistant, a role that strengthened their bond beyond professional ties. Tata relinquished his stake in Naidu’s company, Goodfellows, and waived a personal loan Naidu had taken for his overseas education. The friendship began in 2014 when Naidu, moved by the sight of a stray dog killed on the road, created reflective collars for strays to prevent accidents. Initially hesitant, Naidu wrote to Tata for support after being encouraged by his father. Two months later, Tata invited him for a meeting and supported his NGO, Motopaws.

Naidu later pursued an MBA at Cornell University, where he excelled in leadership roles and received multiple awards. Throughout his studies, he remained in touch with Tata, assisting him in meetings and providing feedback on startups. After completing his MBA, Naidu joined the Office of RNT, Tata’s private office, and spearheaded several socially impactful projects. In 2022, he launched Goodfellows, a companionship service for the elderly, which was backed by Tata.

Naidu gained public attention for his personal connection with Tata, including a viral video of a birthday celebration. In 2021, he published a memoir, I Came Upon a Lighthouse, recounting his experiences with the industrialist.

Ratan Tata passed away on October 9, 2024, at the age of 86. In a LinkedIn tribute, Naidu expressed his grief, saying, “The hole that this friendship has now left with me, I will spend the rest of my life trying to fill. Grief is the price to pay for love. Goodbye, my dear lighthouse.” Naidu now steps into his new role at Tata Motors, carrying forward the values and legacy of Ratan Tata.
