Ranchi, September 2: The East Singhbhum district administration has reportedly ramped up preparations for the Ghatsila assembly by-election, which will take place after the passing of JMM MLA and Jharkhand Education Minister Ramdas Soren.

In this by-election, Ramdas Soren’s son Somesh Soren is likely to contest from the JMM, while Babulal Soren, son of former CM Champai Soren, is expected to be the BJP candidate. While their names are almost certain, both parties are yet to make a formal announcement.

The administration on Tuesday released the draft voter list for the constituency following which the citizens have been asked to check their names and raise claims or objections by September 17. The final voter list will be published on September 29. The administration further informed that young voters who turned 18 by July 1, 2025, can also get their names added.

Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Karna Satyarthi said all steps are being taken to ensure a transparent and fair election process.

This time, the constituency will have 300 polling stations compared to 291 in the last election, which was held in 2024. Nine new centers have been added in Ghatsila, Musabani, Dhalbhumgarh, and Ghorabandha to ease voter crowding.

According to the draft roll released, Ghatsila has 2,51,367 voters – including 1,23,314 men, 1,28,050 women, and three third-gender voters.

Significantly, Ramdas Soren died in New Delhi on Aug. 15. A three-time legislator, he had first entered politics as a gram pradhan of Ghorabanda panchayat before rising to become a cabinet minister in Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s government. In 2024, he had retained Ghatsila seat for a third consecutive term, defeating BJP candidate Babulal Soren by more than 22,000 votes.
