Patna, June 13: A woman constable was killed and three other police personnel injured after a speeding SUV rammed into officers conducting a late-night vehicle check on Atal Path in the eastern Indian city of Patna, police said on Thursday.

The incident occurred between 10:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. during a routine vehicle-checking operation by Sri Krishna Puri police station, according to Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Awakash Kumar. The officers had set up barricades on the service lane when the SUV, travelling at high speed from the Digha side, struck a vehicle under inspection, triggering a chain collision.

The force of the impact threw a woman constable onto a road divider. She was taken to a nearby hospital along with the other injured officers, where she was declared dead, police said. Two sub-inspectors sustained critical injuries, and a fourth person also suffered minor injuries.

Police said the SUV, identified as a Scorpio, had three occupants at the time. Two were arrested at the scene, while the driver managed to flee. Authorities are conducting raids to locate and apprehend the absconding driver.

“We are questioning the arrested individuals to determine if they or the driver were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident,” SSP Kumar said. The incident has raised fresh concerns over road safety and enforcement during nighttime policing operations in urban areas.
