New Delhi, April 02: President Droupadi Murmu will visit Portugal and Slovakia from April 7 to 10 to expand bilateral ties, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Wednesday.
Murmu will be in Portugal from April 7 to 8 at the invitation of Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. The visit comes after 27 years, as India and Portugal mark 50 years since re-establishing diplomatic relations. The last state visit was in 1998 by then-President K R Narayanan.
During her stay, Murmu will hold delegation-level talks with her Portuguese counterpart and meet Prime Minister Luis Montenegro and National Assembly President Jose Pedro Aguiar-Branco. “India and Portugal share historic and friendly ties that have evolved into a modern, multifaceted partnership,” the MEA stated.
From April 9 to 10, Murmu will visit Slovakia at the invitation of Slovak President Peter Pellegrini. This will be the first visit by an Indian President to Slovakia in 29 years.
Murmu will hold bilateral meetings with President Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico. She will also meet Richard Rasi, Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic. “The visit underscores India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Slovakia,” the MEA said.
At both destinations, Murmu will engage with members of the Indian community.
