New Delhi, Sep 19: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) secured three of the four central posts in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections, while an independent candidate won the vice-president’s position, according to the results announced on Saturday.ABVP candidates Yash Dabas, Riya Chhawdi and Lakshya Raj Singh won the president, secretary and joint secretary posts, respectively.
Dabas defeated Congress-backed NSUI candidate Vijay Shankar Meena in the presidential contest. Dabas secured 24,576 votes against Meena’s 22,523, winning by a margin of 2,053 votes.The vice-president’s post went to Deepanshu Shokeen, who contested as an independent candidate. Shokeen, a former NSUI member, secured the position after contesting without the organisation’s ticket.
For the secretary’s post, ABVP’s Riya Chhawdi polled 21,650 votes, while her NSUI rival received 14,869 votes.In the joint secretary contest, ABVP’s Lakshya Raj Singh received 16,615 votes. Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha candidate Vishesh Yadav secured 15,778 votes, while NSUI’s Gopal Chaudhary finished with 15,206 votes.
Following the declaration of results, several BJP leaders congratulated the winning ABVP candidates. Union ministers and other party leaders described the outcome as significant for the student organisation.
Union Health Minister J P Nadda also commented on the results while referring to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent student outreach programme, using the terms “goonj” and “dhamaka” in his political remarks.The election results have also drawn attention because the Congress-backed NSUI failed to secure any of the four central-panel positions, while the vice-president’s post was won by an independent candidate.
The DUSU elections are closely followed because of the participation of student organisations affiliated with or associated with major political formations.
However, the results represent the voting behaviour of Delhi University students participating in the election and do not by themselves establish broader public opinion.Counting was held on Saturday following polling on Friday. Security arrangements were strengthened around the university during the counting process.
