New Delhi, Sep 19: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s name has reportedly appeared among voters flagged during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the national capital, according to a report published by The Wire.The report said an electoral entry matching the name and certain details of the chief minister has been identified in a list of voters requiring verification.
According to the report, the entry relates to a 51-year-old Rekha Gupta listed in Part No. 123 of the Shalimar Bagh constituency. The record has reportedly been flagged over a possible age-related discrepancy involving the voter and one or both parents.
The report said the electoral record associated with the entry also contains details that appear to correspond with information linked to the chief minister. However, Gupta’s office had been contacted for confirmation regarding whether the flagged entry belongs to her.Under the SIR process, voters whose records cannot be matched with earlier electoral rolls or contain certain data discrepancies may be asked to provide documents or clarification to election officials.
The appearance of a name on such a list does not by itself establish that the person is ineligible to vote. The concerned electoral authorities are required to examine the information and supporting documents before taking a final decision on an individual’s entry in the electoral roll.The report also said that former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and some members of his family had reportedly been flagged during the revision process because their records could not be linked to the relevant 2002 electoral rolls.
Rajya Sabha MP and senior advocate Kapil Sibal and his wife were also reported to have appeared on a list of voters requiring verification for being allegedly unmapped to the earlier electoral records.The SIR exercise is aimed at reviewing and updating electoral rolls. Delhi’s draft electoral roll was published as part of the ongoing process, with voters given an opportunity to submit claims, objections or documents wherever required.
The Election Commission is expected to publish the final electoral roll after completion of the verification and claims process.The development has drawn political attention because several prominent political figures have reportedly appeared among voters whose records require verification. Further clarification from the concerned individuals and election authorities is awaited.
