New Delhi, September 9: Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has filed a police complaint against 63 social media handles for allegedly sharing misleading posts and videos about waterlogging at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, officials said.
The airport operator said the online content gave an inaccurate impression about the extent of water accumulation and suggested that airport operations had been disrupted.DIAL said that heavy rainfall on September 4 resulted in temporary water accumulation at the arrival forecourt of Terminal 3.
The airport area recorded about 72.2 mm of rainfall between 2:30 pm and 5:30 pm, according to the operator.Airport personnel responded to the situation and cleared the accumulated water within around 20 minutes.
DIAL maintained that flight operations and other airport activities continued normally during the episode. The operator alleged that some social media accounts used unrelated or old footage to portray the situation at Delhi Airport.
It cited a video from Dubai Airport that was allegedly shared online as if it showed waterlogging at the Delhi facility.DIAL said such posts could mislead passengers, create unnecessary apprehension and harm the reputation of a critical public service.
The airport operator has advised passengers to obtain information about flight schedules and airport conditions from official sources rather than relying on unverified social media content.
The police will examine the allegations and determine whether any offence has been committed by the accounts named in the complaint.
The development comes as authorities and public agencies continue to caution users against sharing unverified photographs and videos during extreme weather conditions.
