New Delhi, September 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on teachers to take a broader approach to education by helping students develop beyond academic knowledge and classroom lessons.
Addressing National Teachers’ Day Award recipients in New Delhi, Modi said educators have an important responsibility in shaping children’s personalities and ensuring that curiosity, creativity and enthusiasm remain an integral part of their development.
The Prime Minister said teachers can bring meaningful change when they establish a strong connection with students and understand their lives and interests rather than concentrating solely on completing the prescribed curriculum.
He also highlighted concerns surrounding children’s increasing dependence on digital devices. Modi encouraged educators and parents to promote sports, outdoor activities and creative engagement to help children maintain a healthy balance in their daily lives.
Health awareness and substance abuse were also among the issues discussed during the interaction. Modi emphasised the need for continued awareness about drug-related risks and welcomed greater participation by women in health screenings, including efforts aimed at improving awareness of breast cancer.
Referring to the National Education Policy, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of exposing students to practical experiences and vocational activities.
He said learning should extend beyond conventional classrooms and help children understand different skills and forms of work.This year, 82 educators have been chosen for the National Teachers Awards across three government departments.
The list comprises 48 school teachers from the Department of School Education and Literacy, 21 teachers and faculty members from higher educational institutions and polytechnics, and 13 skill trainers under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
The award recipients shared their teaching experiences and described innovative methods they have adopted to make learning more engaging and effective for students.
Modi said Teachers’ Day provides an opportunity to recognise the contribution of educators to society and remember former President and Bharat Ratna recipient Dr S Radhakrishnan, whose birth anniversary is observed on September 5.
