New Delhi, August 31: India’s Bhashini initiative is strengthening cooperation with Nepal in the field of language technology by bringing together developers, educators, researchers and innovators to explore new applications of multilingual Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The initiative aims to provide a platform where participants can exchange ideas, learn from each other’s experiences and work jointly on technology solutions designed to make digital services more accessible to people across different languages.
A recent Bhashini Shilpi session focused not only on demonstrating the capabilities of language-based AI but also on encouraging participants to identify challenges, discuss possible solutions and explore opportunities for collaborative innovation.
The initiative is part of India’s broader efforts to use AI and digital technologies to reduce language barriers and promote greater digital inclusion.The Digital India Bhashini Division (DIBD), operating under the Digital India Corporation within the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, serves as India’s national platform for AI-enabled multilingual digital inclusion.
According to the information provided by the government, Bhashini supports more than 800 government websites and processes over nine billion AI-related information units. Its platforms handle more than 24 million AI inferences every day.The system currently supports 36 Indian languages in text, 23 Indian languages through voice technologies and 35 international languages.
The expanding language capabilities are intended to make digital public infrastructure more accessible to citizens regardless of their preferred language. The platform can support applications involving translation, speech and other language-related AI services.
The India-Nepal engagement is expected to create further opportunities for knowledge sharing and joint innovation in language technology. It also highlights the potential of multilingual AI to contribute to a more inclusive digital ecosystem in the region.
The collaboration reflects India’s efforts to promote technology that can serve diverse linguistic communities while encouraging researchers and technology practitioners to develop solutions based on local needs.
