New Delhi, August 30: The Delhi Police has changed the investigating officer handling the hit-and-run case involving 35-year-old singer Jatin Khanna after his family raised concerns over the progress of the investigation and staged repeated protests outside a police station.
Khanna was allegedly struck by an unidentified vehicle near the Mukundpur flyover in northwest Delhi in the early hours of August 2 while he was riding his motorcycle towards his home in Uttam Nagar. The vehicle involved in the collision fled the spot, according to police.
Police said officers reached the location within several minutes and shifted Khanna to a hospital, where he was declared dead.Since the incident, Khanna’s family has been seeking a detailed investigation and has questioned the pace of efforts to identify the vehicle and its driver.
The family held several demonstrations outside the Jahangirpuri police station over the issue.Khanna’s brother, Rohit Khanna, alleged that the family had concerns about the emergency response following the crash. He also questioned whether there had been a delay in taking the injured singer to hospital.
The family has further claimed that CCTV recordings from cameras near the accident site have not been shown to them. They have also raised questions about whether statements of eyewitnesses were properly recorded.
Khanna’s wife, Navya, said the family had repeatedly visited the police station seeking information about the investigation and the identity of the person responsible for the accident.Following the family’s latest complaint and protest on Sunday, police said the investigating officer was changed.
ACP Yogendra Khokhar said the family had expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation and had made allegations concerning the earlier investigating officer.
He said the police had taken action on the complaint and that efforts were continuing to identify and apprehend the accused.The case has drawn attention to the importance of timely evidence collection in hit-and-run investigations, particularly the examination of CCTV recordings and identification of eyewitnesses.
Police have not yet publicly identified the vehicle or the person allegedly responsible for Khanna’s death, and the investigation remains underway.
