New Delhi, Aug 27: Global logistics major FedEx has announced plans to establish a fully automated air cargo hub at GMR Cargo City, located within the Indira Gandhi International Airport complex, in a move aimed at strengthening shipment handling and connectivity from the national capital.
The proposed facility will cover around 230,000 square feet and is expected to bring international cargo gateway and pickup-and-delivery operations under one roof.FedEx has estimated the long-term investment in the facility at approximately USD 150 million.
The hub is designed to increase package-processing capacity from about 600 shipments per hour to nearly 5,000 per hour, with scope for further expansion as demand rises.The facility is expected to feature automated sorting systems, advanced X-ray screening equipment, upgraded security infrastructure and intelligent package-handling technologies.
According to FedEx, the technology-driven setup is expected to improve processing efficiency, strengthen the reliability of its logistics network and provide faster movement of shipments.Kami Viswanathan, president of FedEx Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa, said India remains an important market for the company’s global network, with northern and eastern parts of the country offering significant opportunities linked to trade and economic growth.
The company said the Delhi investment reflects its long-term commitment to India and its intention to expand the capacity and capabilities required to meet the country’s changing logistics needs.GMR Cargo City is being developed as an integrated cargo and logistics hub at Delhi Airport. The project spans around 50 acres and has an overall development potential of approximately 1.5 million to 2 million square feet.
Its first phase is planned across nearly 30 acres and is expected to comprise around 1 million square feet of development. Detailed designs for the first phase have been completed, with construction expected to commence shortly.Rajesh Arora, president and chief executive — Commercial & Growth at GMR Airports Ltd, said the FedEx project reflects the growing importance of Delhi Airport as a global logistics gateway.
He said GMR Cargo City is being developed to bring together modern infrastructure, technology and logistics operators to facilitate more efficient cargo movement.The new FedEx facility is expected to support businesses across northern and eastern India by improving access to international markets.
It could also strengthen the logistics infrastructure required to handle India’s expanding trade, e-commerce and express-delivery sectors.The project will form part of the broader development of Delhi Airport’s cargo ecosystem and is expected to contribute to the city’s role as a key air freight gateway for India.
