New Delhi, Aug 27: The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has outlined a range of measures aimed at strengthening student welfare, academic support and mental-health services amid protests following the death of a 31-year-old MSc Physics student on the campus.
The institute said student well-being remains a key priority and highlighted initiatives covering academic flexibility, counselling, mentorship, grievance redressal and diversity and inclusion.As part of its academic support measures, IIT Delhi said the curriculum introduced in 2025 reduced first-semester credit requirements and added life-skills courses.
First-year departmental classes have also been limited to around 30 to 60 students, while weekend examinations are being minimised.The institute further said it removed the minimum CGPA requirement for the BTech degree from the 2024-25 academic year and retained flexibility in credit distribution.
IIT Delhi said it has also expanded opportunities for students to interact with faculty members through semester-wise meetings, office hours, project guidance, hostel engagement and class committee feedback.On mental health, the institute said students can access counselling and psychiatric services around the clock.
It also provides access to external care with reimbursement, along with an emergency response mechanism and Academic Unit Wellness Committees.Its student mentorship initiatives have also been expanded. The UG Buddy Programme was extended in 2025 to include postgraduate and international students, while wellness programmes involving yoga and meditation have been part of the institute’s initiatives for several years.
For students facing academic difficulties, the Academic Progress Group has been providing evening tutoring and assistance to those dealing with credit backlogs since 2023.The institute has also listed several channels through which students can raise complaints.
These include the centralised ERP system, Board for Student Welfare, SC/ST and OBC cells, hostel wardens, the Internal Complaints Committee and confidential counselling services.IIT Delhi said its Office of Diversity and Inclusion has been working on accessibility and non-discrimination initiatives.
Sensitisation programmes for students address issues relating to caste, gender, language, region and ethnicity.Meanwhile, the institute has reconstituted the external committee examining the circumstances surrounding the death of the MSc Physics student. Retired Delhi High Court judge Justice Mukta Gupta has been appointed as the new chairperson.
The committee is expected to examine the circumstances of the incident and concerns raised by students following the death.The student protests have continued for several days, with the demonstrations entering their fourth day.
IIT Delhi had also suspended classes on Monday amid the protests.The institute’s latest measures come as students and the administration remain focused on questions surrounding campus welfare, academic pressure and access to support systems.
The external committee’s findings are expected to provide further clarity on the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and may inform any additional measures required to strengthen student support at the institute.
