New Delhi, Aug. 5 : Proceedings in both Houses of Parliament were adjourned till 2 p.m. on Wednesday as Opposition members staged protests over multiple issues, including the demand for a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on alleged police action against students, the alleged misappropriation of Ram Temple donations and restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
Ahead of the day’s sitting, Opposition MPs held a protest march in the Parliament House complex, raising slogans and demanding discussions on the issues.Amid the ongoing deadlock, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju met Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi at the latter’s chamber in Parliament in an apparent effort to break the impasse.
While the Lok Sabha witnessed repeated disruptions, the Rajya Sabha functioned briefly before being adjourned. During Question Hour, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari informed the House that nearly 1.8 lakh people lose their lives in road accidents across the country every year.
The Lok Sabha was scheduled to take up the Bankers’ Books Evidence Bill, 2026 and the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 for consideration and passage.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to move the proposed legislation, which seeks to modernise banking evidence laws in line with digital banking practices and amend provisions of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, the Income-tax Act and the Finance Act.
In the Rajya Sabha, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal is slated to move the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, which proposes an increase in the sanctioned strength of judges in the apex court.
Further proceedings in both Houses are expected to resume at 2 p.m., with the government hoping to push ahead with its legislative agenda amid continued Opposition protests.
