PM Modi, UK PM Burnham discuss expanding India-UK strategic partnership

New Delhi, July 31 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a telephone conversation with newly elected United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham, congratulating him on assuming office and conveying his best wishes for a successful tenure. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and expanding cooperation across key sectors.

According to an official statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Prime Minister Modi extended warm congratulations to Burnham on taking charge as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The leaders reviewed the current state of bilateral relations and discussed ways to further elevate the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Both leaders agreed to work closely in line with the India-UK Vision 2035, which provides the roadmap for long-term cooperation in areas of mutual interest. They decided to deepen collaboration in priority sectors including technology, innovation, defence, security, clean energy, education, research, and people-to-people exchanges.

The two Prime Ministers also welcomed the recent implementation of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), describing it as a significant milestone in bilateral relations. They expressed confidence that the agreement would unlock fresh opportunities for trade, investment, innovation and economic growth while benefiting businesses and citizens in both countries.

During the conversation, the leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest. They discussed the importance of working together to address shared global challenges and reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close coordination on international issues.

Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Burnham agreed to remain in regular contact and continue high-level engagement to further strengthen cooperation across strategic, economic and diplomatic spheres, while advancing the shared vision of a stronger and more comprehensive India-UK partnership.
