Patna, July 25: CPI(ML) Liberation MLA Sandeep Saurav was arrested by Bihar Police in connection with the violence that erupted during a student protest in Patna over the alleged NEET examination paper leak, officials said.
According to police, Saurav was taken into custody following allegations that he played a role in inciting violence during a demonstration organised by student groups earlier this week.
The protest later turned violent, with reports of clashes, damage to vehicles and attacks on public property.Senior police officials said the legislator was produced before a court and subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
The investigation into the incident is continuing.The protest, led by student organisations demanding action over the alleged examination irregularities, witnessed confrontations between demonstrators and security personnel in parts of Patna.
Police alleged that some protesters resorted to stone-pelting and vandalism, prompting law enforcement agencies to intervene.
The incident also triggered a political confrontation in the Bihar Assembly, where ruling alliance legislators accused the CPI(ML) leader of encouraging unrest during the agitation.
Opposition leaders, however, continued to support the students’ demand for accountability in the alleged examination leak case.The unrest later spread to several districts, including Jehanabad, Darbhanga, Katihar and Begusarai, where police reported incidents of road blockades, stone-pelting and damage to government property.
Authorities responded by increasing security deployment and carrying out detentions in connection with the violence.Officials said more than 100 protesters were detained across different districts during the protests, while several arrests were made as investigations progressed.
Police said the inquiry into the violence is ongoing and further action will be taken against those found responsible for attacks on security personnel, vandalism and disruption of public order.
Meanwhile, security remains on high alert in sensitive areas as authorities continue to monitor the situation.
