Dhanbad, July 14: The Jharkhand government has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to transform BIT Sindri into a premier research-based technical institution while accelerating teacher recruitment and strengthening the state’s higher education ecosystem through a series of structural reforms.
The announcement was made by Principal Secretary of the Higher and Technical Education Department Rahul Kumar Purwar after chairing a high-level review meeting in Dhanbad on Tuesday with Deputy Commissioner Aditya Ranjan, faculty members of BIT Sindri, officials of Binod Bihari Mahto Koyalanchal University (BBMKU), and senior officials of the Education Department.
The meeting focused on improving the quality of higher education, promoting research activities, addressing faculty shortages, modernising infrastructure and ensuring timely academic sessions across universities and colleges.
Purwar said the government is working to develop BIT Sindri into a research-based technical institute of excellence, with a comprehensive review conducted of the institute’s laboratories, research infrastructure, faculty strength, available resources and future requirements.
“The government is working to develop BIT Sindri into a research-based technical institute of excellence (Research Hub),” he said, adding that deficiencies identified during the review would be addressed in a phased manner.
Describing BIT Sindri as the state’s oldest and most prestigious technical institution and BBMKU as a relatively new university, Purwar said the visit was aimed at strengthening Dhanbad’s higher education ecosystem.
“BIT Sindri is Jharkhand’s oldest and most prestigious technical institute, while BBMKU is a relatively new university. The objective of this visit is to further strengthen and modernise Dhanbad’s higher education ecosystem,” he said.
Highlighting the challenges facing higher education in the state, Purwar identified the shortage of qualified teachers as the most pressing concern.
“The biggest challenge before universities and colleges is the shortage of qualified teachers,” he said.
To address the issue, the Principal Secretary said the government is setting up the Jharkhand University Service Commission following the implementation of the State University Act. The new body will streamline and expedite appointments to teaching posts in universities and colleges.
“After the implementation of the State University Act, the University Service Commission will be formed, making the recruitment process transparent and faster,” Purwar said.
He expressed confidence that the recruitment process would be completed within the next year, filling long-pending vacancies and improving the quality of education.
“The recruitment process is expected to be completed within the next year, filling long-pending vacant teaching posts,” he added.
Purwar also announced that the government is introducing a new academic management system to ensure timely admissions, regular classes, examinations and publication of results, with the objective of preventing disruptions in students’ academic sessions.
“The government is implementing a new system to ensure timely admissions, regular classes, examinations and declaration of results so that students’ academic sessions are not affected,” he said.
Emphasising the state’s broader vision for higher education, Purwar said the government’s focus is on creating a quality learning environment across all institutions by strengthening infrastructure, research culture and teaching systems rather than drawing comparisons between government and private colleges.
“Our goal is not merely to compare government and private institutions but to create an environment of quality education in every institution,” he said.
The proposed reforms are expected to benefit thousands of students across Jharkhand by making higher educational institutions more modern, research-oriented and employment-focused.
