Sydney, Mar 25: Police in Australia have arrested and charged a 23-year-old man described as a “major player” in the alleged kidnapping and murder of 85-year-old grandfather Chris Baghsarian, in a case investigators say may have stemmed from mistaken identity.
The elderly widower was abducted from his home in North Ryde in the early hours of February 13. Authorities later discovered his body nearly two weeks later near a golf course in Pitt Town, bringing a tragic end to a case that had prompted urgent public appeals.
New South Wales Police identified the latest आरोपी as Delkin Jake Donnelly, who now faces multiple charges including murder, kidnapping, firearms possession, and drug-related offences. He is expected to appear in court following his arrest during a tactical police operation in Seven Hills.
Two other men — Gerard Andrews and Daniel Stevens — had already been charged in connection with the case earlier.
Police Outline Alleged Role
Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Marks stated that the accused played a significant operational role in the crime, though not at the top of the hierarchy.
“He is not the highest but he is a major player in this matter,” Marks said.
Police allege that the suspect helped organise the abduction by recruiting others and coordinating key aspects of the operation.
“We will allege that he facilitated and recruited others to assist in the kidnapping and detention,” Marks said, adding that he also arranged for the disposal of the victim’s body.
Investigators further claim the accused was physically present during the abduction at North Ryde and transported the victim to a property in Dural, described as a “stronghold,” where he was held for approximately 40 hours.
Expanding Investigation
Authorities believe the case involves a wider network, with as many as nine individuals potentially linked to the crime.
“We believe up to nine people were involved… We will continue the investigation, no matter what part they played,” Marks said.
CCTV footage has reportedly placed the accused among a group seen near the detention site. Police also traced a vehicle allegedly used in the crime, which was later found burnt out.
During searches linked to the arrest, officers seized firearms, ammunition, drugs, and electronic devices, indicating possible links to broader criminal activity.
Possible Mistaken Identity
Investigators are exploring the possibility that Baghsarian was not the intended target. Local reports suggest the perpetrators may have been attempting to reach individuals connected to organised crime, raising concerns about a fatal error in identification.
Disturbingly, unverified images of the injured victim were said to have circulated within criminal circles following the abduction.
Police had earlier issued public appeals for the victim’s safe return, citing his serious health condition and need for daily medication.
Family in Mourning
The killing has left the victim’s family devastated. Relative Arthur Hagopian remembered him as a kind and devoted family man.
“He was an upbeat, kind and gentle soul who lived for his family and his grandchildren,” he said.
“He should never have gone the way he did.”
