Philippines, Jan 7: A strong 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of the Philippines on January 7, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The quake was recorded about 68 kilometres east of Baculin and originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, a factor that can intensify surface shaking.
The offshore tremor was felt across parts of Surigao del Sur, triggering concern among residents in nearby coastal communities. However, no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage were received in the aftermath.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned that aftershocks were possible and advised local authorities to remain vigilant as assessments continued.
Describing the situation on the ground, Hinatuan police chief Joey Monato said residents briefly evacuated buildings as a precaution. “It was not that strong, but people rushed outside,” he said.
Authorities said monitoring efforts were ongoing to assess any delayed impact and to track potential aftershocks, while urging the public to stay alert and follow safety advisories.
