Beijing, Jan 7: China has strongly condemned the United States’ military raid in Venezuela that led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, calling it a violation of international law and a threat to regional stability.
China’s Foreign Ministry said it was “deeply shocked” by the U.S. use of force against a sovereign state, accusing Washington of acting as a “world judge” and engaging in hegemonic behaviour. President Xi Jinping warned that unilateral bullying is damaging the international order.
At the UN Security Council, China joined several countries in denouncing the operation as a crime of aggression, while the UN human rights office said the action undermined fundamental principles of international law.
The raid has raised serious concerns in Beijing due to China’s major economic and strategic interests in Venezuela, including billions of dollars invested in oil and infrastructure projects. Chinese regulators have reportedly asked banks to assess exposure to Venezuelan debt amid rising uncertainty.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington would not allow the Western Hemisphere to become a base for rivals, a remark widely seen as directed at China’s growing influence in Latin America.
Analysts say the episode highlights escalating U.S.–China geopolitical rivalry, creating both risks for China’s overseas investments and long-term implications for global power dynamics.
