Sikkim woman dies following domestic dispute; police take accused into custody

Gangtok, Dec 30: A 22-year-old woman from Dzongu village in North Sikkim died on Monday after she was allegedly assaulted by her boyfriend at Marchak, under the jurisdiction of Ranipool Police Station.

According to police sources, both the victim and the accused are residents of Dzongu.

The woman had reportedly come to Marchak to visit her relatives when the incident occurred at around 2 pm on December 29.

During her visit, an altercation allegedly broke out between her and her boyfriend, during which she sustained serious injuries.

Family members and local residents, along with police personnel, rushed the woman to Manipal Hospital for treatment. However, she succumbed to her injuries while being taken to the hospital, officials said.

Ranipool Police immediately took cognisance of the incident and arrested the accused boyfriend, who is currently in police custody. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.

Police officials said statements of witnesses are being recorded and all aspects of the case are being examined to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the woman’s death.
