Gangtok, Dec 23: An Indian Army jawan lost his life after a raft capsized in the Teesta River during a routine training exercise in Sikkim’s Pakyong district, officials said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Monday during an annual rafting training programme conducted by the Army between Bardang and Rangpo Mining, a stretch of the river known for strong currents.
According to officials, the raft carrying soldiers struck a damaged iron bridge structure and overturned in the fast-flowing river, sweeping one soldier away.
The bridge had been damaged and partially collapsed into the river during the devastating floods of 2023, making the river conditions particularly hazardous.
Following the mishap, the Army immediately launched a search and rescue operation with the assistance of personnel from the Teesta Rescue Centre.
After sustained efforts, the body of the missing jawan was recovered downstream at Tar Khola (also known as Tista Khola) in West Bengal’s Kalimpong district.
The deceased was identified as Lance Naik Rajasekhar of the 19 Artillery Regiment, officials confirmed. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
Senior Army officials expressed condolences to the bereaved family and said all necessary assistance and support are being extended.
An internal review has also been initiated to assess safety protocols for training exercises conducted in high-risk riverine zones.
