Washington, September 29: U.S. President Donald Trump will host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday, seeking agreement on a Gaza peace framework after several Western nations recognized Palestinian statehood despite U.S. and Israeli opposition.
The meeting marks Netanyahu’s fourth visit to Washington since Trump returned to office in January. Trump told Reuters he hopes to secure Netanyahu’s approval on a 21-point plan aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza and securing the release of hostages held by Hamas.
The U.S. plan calls for the release of all hostages, no further Israeli attacks on Qatar, and renewed dialogue between Israel and Palestinians for “peaceful coexistence,” according to a White House official. Israeli officials have raised concerns over the proposed role of Palestinian security forces, the expulsion of Hamas officials, and overall security responsibilities in Gaza. Netanyahu opposes any role for Hamas or the Palestinian Authority in future governance of Gaza.
The discussions come as Israel faces mounting international criticism over its nearly two-year war in Gaza, which followed a Hamas attack in October 2023 that killed some 1,200 Israelis. Israeli military operations have killed more than 65,000 people in Gaza, creating widespread destruction and a deepening humanitarian crisis. The International Criminal Court has issued a warrant against Netanyahu for alleged war crimes, which Israel rejects.
Trump has criticized recent recognition of Palestinian independence by countries including Britain, France, Canada, and Australia, calling it a “prize to Hamas.” Netanyahu has also condemned the move at the U.N., while some of his ministers have suggested annexing parts of the West Bank in response. Trump, however, has said he will not allow West Bank annexation, citing potential risks to the Abraham Accords.
Netanyahu is under pressure from hostages’ families and a war-weary Israeli public. Analysts say Monday’s talks could expose potential tensions despite the close U.S.-Israel alliance, particularly over security arrangements and the role of Palestinian authorities in Gaza.
