Beijing, May 5 – Three people died and 60 were hospitalised after two passenger boats carrying tourists capsized in southwestern China’s Guizhou province, state media reported on Monday. The incident occurred on Sunday in Qianxi City, where around 70 people fell into the water after the vessels overturned on a local river, according to China’s official Xinhua news agency, citing local authorities.
Rescue teams were continuing to search for 14 people still missing as of Sunday evening. Chinese President Xi Jinping called for “all-out efforts” in the ongoing search and rescue operation and urged authorities to ensure the treatment of the injured, Xinhua said.
The cause of the capsizing has not yet been confirmed. The disaster comes just over two months after a fatal boating accident in Hunan province, where 11 people were killed when a passenger boat collided with an industrial vessel, throwing 19 people overboard.
