King Charles III Hospitalized for Observation After Cancer Treatment Side Effects
LONDON, March 27 – King Charles III was hospitalized for observation on Thursday after experiencing “temporary side effects” related to his scheduled cancer treatment, Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
The 76-year-old monarch has since been discharged and returned to Clarence House. His engagements for Thursday afternoon and Friday have been canceled as a precautionary measure, the palace said.
“His Majesty has now returned to Clarence House and, acting on medical advice, tomorrow’s diary programme will also be rescheduled,” the statement said. “His Majesty would like to send his apologies to all those who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result.”
King Charles has been undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer for over a year. While he has taken time off from public engagements, he has continued to fulfill state duties, including reviewing government papers and meeting with the Prime Minister.
His health has been under close scrutiny since he announced his diagnosis last year, adding pressure on the British monarchy, which is adapting following the 70-year reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II. The King, who ascended the throne in September 2022, has sought to modernize the institution and reaffirm its relevance in contemporary Britain.
Although the role of a constitutional monarch is largely ceremonial, royal duties can be physically demanding. King Charles carried out 161 days of engagements during his first year on the throne, including meetings with political leaders, dedication ceremonies, and public events.
The King’s illness comes as the royal family faces another health challenge—his daughter-in-law, Kate, the Princess of Wales, was also diagnosed with cancer. Kate, the wife of Prince William, took more than six months off before returning to public duties in late September.
