Harare, July 23: India will begin a three-match T20 International series against Zimbabwe on Wednesday with an eye on ending a disappointing run in the shortest format and giving a new generation of players an opportunity to impress on the international stage.
The series, to be played entirely at Harare Sports Club, comes after India endured a difficult stretch in T20Is, losing six consecutive matches following its T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year.
The tour is expected to serve as a platform for rebuilding the squad and testing young talent ahead of future international assignments.
Shreyas Iyer will lead the Indian side, while Tilak Varma has been named vice-captain.
The squad features a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging players, with several senior cricketers rested for the tour.
Teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is expected to receive another opportunity after a brief stint in international cricket earlier this season.
He is likely to open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma. Wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh and all-rounder Harsh Dubey are also among the players who could make their international debuts during the series.
India have also welcomed back Rinku Singh and fast bowler Mayank Yadav, while leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi has joined the squad as a replacement for the injured Varun Chakaravarthy.
Zimbabwe, captained by experienced all-rounder Sikandar Raza, will rely on home conditions and a settled squad to challenge the visitors.
The hosts have retained key players, including Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, Brian Bennett and Ryan Burl, as they look to produce a strong performance against India.
The three-match series will be played on July 23, 25 and 26 at the Harare Sports Club.
