Brasília, July 20: Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro has been ordered to wear an electronic ankle monitor and is barred from using social media or contacting other individuals under investigation by the country’s Supreme Federal Court, his press office said on Friday.
The restrictions were imposed as part of a series of precautionary measures ordered by the court, which also authorized federal police to conduct searches at Bolsonaro’s residence and the headquarters of his political party in Brasília, according to people familiar with the matter.
A police statement confirmed the execution of “two search and seizure warrants, in addition to precautionary measures other than arrest,” but did not mention Bolsonaro by name.
Local media reported that the court order prohibits Bolsonaro from communicating with several individuals also under investigation, including his son, Eduardo Bolsonaro, a Brazilian lawmaker currently residing in the United States. Eduardo is known for his strong ties to U.S. President Donald Trump.
The details of the Supreme Court investigation remain sealed, and neither the court nor Bolsonaro has publicly disclosed the reason behind the latest enforcement actions. The former president has faced a series of legal challenges since leaving office in 2022, including probes related to alleged coup plots and attacks on democratic institutions.
Bolsonaro has denied any wrongdoing in previous cases and claims he is being politically persecuted.
