Colombo, Jan 3: Water supply to several parts of Colombo and its suburbs was disrupted on Friday following a failure in the main transmission pipeline carrying water from Ambathale to Dehiwala, officials said.
The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) confirmed that the damage resulted in a complete shutdown of water services in a number of densely populated residential and commercial areas. Locations affected by the outage include Moratuwa, Rawathawatta, Zoysa Pura, Ratmalana, Mount Lavinia, Dehiwala, Wellawatte, Pamankada, Mulleriyawa, and Kolonnawa.
Meanwhile, consumers in Battaramulla are receiving water at reduced pressure due to the impact on the distribution network.
The NWSDB said emergency maintenance crews were deployed immediately after the rupture was detected, and repair operations are currently ongoing. Authorities expect normal water supply to be restored before midnight, subject to the successful completion of repairs.
The Board issued an apology to the public, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the unexpected disruption.
