Lonavala, Sept 18: Vice President C P Radhakrishnan on Friday highlighted the continuing relevance of yoga in modern life, saying the ancient discipline can help people maintain concentration, self-awareness and balance amid the growing flow of digital information.
Addressing the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Gordhandas Seksaria College of Yoga and Cultural Synthesis at Kaivalyadham in Lonavala, Radhakrishnan congratulated the institution on completing 75 years of dedicated service in yoga education, research and cultural integration.
He also noted Kaivalyadham’s century-long association with yoga and recalled the contribution of Swami Kuvalayananda, who established the institution in 1924 and promoted the scientific study of yoga at a time when the practice was often viewed primarily as a mystical tradition.
Radhakrishnan said institutions that preserve valuable traditions and pass them on to younger generations play an important role in society. He emphasised that yoga should not be viewed as a practice limited to any particular generation but as a discipline with relevance for people across generations.
Referring to the growing international acceptance of yoga, the Vice President said the practice has expanded across countries, cultures and communities. He also acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to promote yoga on international platforms.
Speaking about the impact of rapid technological development and constant digital connectivity, Radhakrishnan said yoga provides an opportunity for people to pause, reflect and reconnect with themselves.
He said yoga can help bridge the gap between the mind and body while contributing to physical and mental well-being. Referring to Patanjali’s concept of controlling the fluctuations of the mind, he said the ability to remain calm and focused has become particularly important in an era of continuous information and information overload.
Addressing young students, Radhakrishnan said India’s youth possess considerable energy, talent and ambition. He stressed that these qualities can be channelled more effectively when combined with discipline and awareness.
The Vice President also underlined the importance of creating a lasting social legacy through sincere efforts undertaken for the welfare of society. He said institutions and individuals committed to constructive work can continue to inspire future generations.
During the programme, Radhakrishnan released the book “Yoga Explain – Learn from the Master”, authored by O P Tiwari. He also visited the campus and interacted with students, encouraging them to cultivate discipline, concentration and self-awareness through regular yoga practice.
Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, former Union minister and Kaivalyadham Global chairman Suresh Prabhu, Kaivalyadham Global CEO Subodh Tiwari, chief patron Rakesh Seksaria, faculty members, students, alumni and other dignitaries attended the event.
