Chennai, Sep 24: Two senior IPS officers, who were in key positions in the Chennai Police Commissionerate when a complaint against Gem Granites owner Veeramani allegedly surfaced, were on Thursday transferred from their posts and placed on compulsory wait.
A. Arun, ADGP, Tamil Nadu Police Academy, and N. Kannan, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore, were transferred with immediate effect, according to an order issued by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) K. Manivasan.
The order, however, did not specify the reasons for the transfers.
The development came against the backdrop of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee Scheduled Caste department leader Ranjan Kumar’s claim that he had submitted a complaint to Kannan in November 2024, when Kannan was serving as Additional Commissioner of Police, Chennai.
According to Kumar, Kannan had told him that he would take up the complaint after discussing it with then Chennai Police Commissioner Arun.
Police registered an FIR in the case only last year, stating that it had received an anonymous letter and a pen drive, allegedly containing evidence of sexual abuse, through a representative of a non-governmental organisation.
As per the Home Department order, DGP (Training) Rajeev Kumar will hold additional charge of the Tamil Nadu Police Academy, while R.V. Ramya Bharati, IGP, West Zone, will hold additional charge as Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore.
Kumar has said, “As early as November 2024, I had given a complaint about the crime to Mr. Kannan.”
The Home Department order stated that Arun and Kannan were being “transferred with immediate effect and placed on compulsory wait.”
