A senior official from the highways ministry told PTI that the toll charges have increased by an average of 4 to 5 percent. The official said that the annual adjustment, effective April 1, is linked to inflation.
The NHAI sets toll charges for each highway and expressway individually. India has approximately 855 toll plazas, with 675 operated by the government and 180 managed by private companies, in accordance with the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008.
The toll increase will affect major routes, including the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Eastern Peripheral Expressway, and Delhi-Jaipur Highway. The hike is expected to raise travel expenses for daily commuters, transport businesses, and logistics companies.
The NHAI maintains that the toll fees are essential for the upkeep of existing highways and the construction of new road projects. Motorists are advised to check the revised toll rates for their routes.
