Patna, Aug 14: Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor has secured his first electoral victory by winning the Bankipur Assembly bypoll in Bihar, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha, according to the election results cited in the report.Kishor polled more than 63,000 votes, while Sinha secured over 44,000 votes. RJD candidate Rekha Gupta was also in the contest.

The result marks a significant shift in Kishor’s political journey, as he had previously been known primarily as an election strategist and campaign manager rather than an elected politician. The Bankipur bypoll was necessitated after BJP leader Nitin Nabin vacated the Assembly seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha.

Bankipur, located in Patna, has traditionally been considered a strong BJP constituency. The party had represented the seat since 1995, making Kishor’s victory particularly notable.Kishor rose to prominence in Indian politics through his work as an election strategist. He was associated with the 2014 Lok Sabha campaign and subsequently worked with several political parties and leaders across the country.

He launched the Jan Suraaj campaign in Bihar in 2022 as a statewide political outreach programme. The initiative later developed into the Jan Suraaj Party, which was formally launched in 2024.The party contested the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections but failed to win a seat. The Bankipur victory therefore represents the party’s first electoral breakthrough.

With the bypoll victory, Kishor will enter the Bihar Legislative Assembly as an elected representative for the first time. The result also gives Jan Suraaj its first presence in the state legislature and provides Kishor with a platform to pursue his political agenda from inside the Assembly.

However, the party’s ability to convert the bypoll victory into a broader political presence in Bihar will depend on its organisational expansion and performance in future elections. For Kishor, the Bankipur result marks a transition from influencing electoral politics from outside the legislature to participating directly in the state’s lawmaking process.
