New Delhi, July 30 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to review the evolving situation arising from the ongoing conflict in West Asia and assess measures taken by various ministries and departments to safeguard India’s strategic and economic interests.
The meeting, the fourth special CCS session on the issue, focused on the impact of the geopolitical situation on energy security, fertiliser supplies, Indian nationals abroad and the country’s overall preparedness.
According to an official statement, the Cabinet Secretary briefed the committee on the prevailing geopolitical developments and the steps taken to ensure adequate availability of petroleum products, including crude oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and fertilisers.
The government informed the CCS that LPG procurement sources have already been diversified and that the overall stock position and supply of key petroleum products remain adequate. It also noted that sufficient crude oil availability has enabled central public sector refinery units to operate at over 100 per cent capacity, ensuring uninterrupted production of petrol, diesel and other petroleum products.
The meeting was also informed about ongoing efforts to expand piped natural gas (PNG) connections, strengthen the National Gas Grid, enhance LNG import and regasification infrastructure, expand city gas distribution networks and promote industrial substitution of LPG through the Pipeline Infrastructure Order, 2026.
Reviewing preparations for the upcoming Rabi cropping season, the CCS assessed the country’s fertiliser requirements and discussed alternative sourcing strategies. The Prime Minister directed all concerned ministries to take every necessary step to ensure uninterrupted availability of fertilisers for farmers.
The committee also reviewed the situation of Indian and foreign-flagged merchant vessels operating in conflict-affected waters and the welfare of Indian seafarers deployed in the region.
Prime Minister Modi directed the government to establish a dedicated mechanism to provide timely information, emergency assistance and counselling support to seafarers and their families.
Emphasising the safety of Indian citizens and the Indian diaspora, the Prime Minister said every possible effort should be made to protect them from the impact of the ongoing conflict.
The Prime Minister also underlined the importance of achieving greater energy self-reliance by accelerating the adoption of renewable energy sources, including solar power and other non-fossil fuel alternatives.
Calling for a whole-of-government approach, Modi directed ministries and departments to continue working in close coordination to address emerging challenges arising from the crisis. He instructed officials to establish an integrated monitoring mechanism to ensure continuous assessment of developments and enable swift implementation of measures aimed at protecting the interests of citizens and the country.
