New Delhi, Aug 12: The Monsoon Session of Parliament witnessed intense Opposition protests on Wednesday as the Lok Sabha adopted a motion to refer the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026 to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for detailed examination.
The motion was passed by voice vote amid sloganeering by Opposition MPs. The House was adjourned shortly afterwards and will reconvene at 11 am on Thursday, August 13.
In the Rajya Sabha, the government secured approval for the nomination of 10 members from the Upper House to the joint committee that will examine the FCRA amendment legislation.
The Rajya Sabha also passed the National Co-operative Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026 and took up the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, which seeks to change the state’s official name to Keralam.
Rijiju offers discussion on student protests
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the government was ready to begin an immediate discussion in the Lok Sabha on the NEET-related students’ protests, provided Opposition MPs maintain decorum and cooperate with the proceedings.
The Opposition has been demanding a discussion and a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah over the police action against protesters on July 20.
Rijiju also indicated that the government could consider extending the session if the Congress agrees to participate in discussions on the issue.
With the session scheduled to conclude on Thursday, both Houses are facing pressure to complete pending legislative business amid continued disruptions.
