Kangpokpi, Dec 30: In a major crackdown on illicit drug cultivation, security forces destroyed approximately 35 acres of poppy plantations in the hill ranges of Langkhong (Saisijang) in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Sunday.

The operation was carried out by a joint task force comprising the Manipur Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Forest Department and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

Officials said the site was one of the largest poppy cultivation areas detected in the region so far this year.

During the operation, security personnel dismantled and destroyed 12 makeshift huts used by cultivators.

A large quantity of materials supporting the illegal cultivation was also seized and burnt, including 13 bags of fertilisers, 19 bottles of Roundup herbicide and 16 bags of salt.

Equipment essential for poppy cultivation, such as spray pumps, irrigation pipes and additional herbicides, was also confiscated and destroyed on the spot to prevent reuse.

Authorities said the action has dealt a significant blow to the illegal opium trade, which continues to fuel drug trafficking networks across northeastern India.

Surveillance in the surrounding areas has been intensified to prevent the re-establishment of such plantations.

No arrests were made, as those involved had abandoned the site prior to the raid. Investigations are underway to identify and trace the individuals responsible for the illegal cultivation, officials added.
