Beed (Maharashtra), Jan 2 : A 23 year old woman allegedly ended her life by jumping into a well along with her three and a half year old son in Beed district of Maharashtra, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place on Wednesday in the Darade Vasti area near Limbarui village in Beed tehsil. The deceased were identified as Prajakta Rameshwar Darade and her son Vedant, officials said.

According to police, Prajakta left her house with her son on Wednesday morning and headed to a well located around 300 metres away, where she allegedly took the extreme step. When the mother and child did not return home for a long time, family members launched a search and later checked the well.

Prajakta’s body was recovered around noon. However, the child’s body could not be found initially due to the high water level in the well, officials said.

The local administration subsequently deployed four to five electric pumps to drain the well. After five to six hours of continuous pumping, the boy’s body was found at the bottom of the well late on Wednesday night.

Both bodies were sent to the district hospital for post-mortem examinations, police said, adding that the motive behind the woman’s extreme step is not yet known.

A case has been registered and investigations are underway from all angles, police added.
