New Delhi, Aug 10: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice Kameshwar Rao as the next Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, according to details released following the Collegium’s meeting.The decision was taken by the Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant at its meeting on August 6.
The recommendation will now go through the prescribed process before the appointment is formally notified.Justice Kameshwar Rao is currently associated with the Delhi High Court. Born in 1965, he completed his law degree from Delhi University in 1987 and enrolled with the Bar in 1990.
He began practising law in 1991, primarily before the Delhi High Court, and was designated a Senior Advocate in January 2010.He was appointed an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on April 17, 2013, and became a permanent judge in March 2015.Justice Rao was transferred to the Karnataka High Court in June 2024, where he subsequently served as Acting Chief Justice. He returned to the Delhi High Court in July 2025.
If approved, his appointment will place him at the helm of the Patna High Court, where the Chief Justice is responsible for both judicial and administrative functions of the court.The Collegium has also recommended appointments of Chief Justices for three other High Courts.
Justice Ravindra V Ghuge has been proposed for the Calcutta High Court, Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi for the Bombay High Court, and Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra for the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The recommendations are part of the Supreme Court Collegium’s ongoing exercise to fill key leadership positions in various High Courts.
