Twin daylight heists shake Jharkhand

Ranchi, September 3: Jharkhand witnessed two alarming daylight crimes on Wednesday, raising concerns over rising law and order issues in the state. In Gomia, a daring theft took place at the residence of a schoolteacher, while in Jamshedpur’s Sonari, armed robbers targeted a jewellery shop in a bustling market.

In the first incident, Rinku Vishwakarma, a teacher at DAV Public School, returned home in Gomia’s Swang Officer Colony after school hours only to find the main door lock broken. On checking further, she discovered the back entrance open, almirahs broken, and household belongings scattered. Thieves stole jewelry and cash worth over ₹17.5 lakh, including multiple gold ornaments, silver items, and ₹9,000 in cash.

Vishwakarma reported seeing two suspicious bikes—one carrying three men and the other a single rider—shortly before discovering the burglary. Police have launched an investigation and assured swift action.

Meanwhile, in Jamshedpur’s Sonari area, panic spread after a broad-daylight armed robbery at Vardhman Jewellers on Dispensary Road. CCTV footage showed a group of men entering the shop as customers before pulling out pistols. The shopkeeper, however, displayed remarkable courage by resisting them despite being outnumbered. The robbers overpowered him, hit him with a pistol butt, and even fired in the air to create fear. Thanks to the shopkeeper’s defiance, the gang managed to get away with only five gold chains, preventing what could have been a much larger heist.

Police have recovered empty cartridges from the spot and circulated CCTV footage to neighboring districts and states. SSP Piyush Pandey assured that the culprits would be arrested soon, with informers already activated in the area.

The two incidents of Wednesday has left residents and business communities shaken across the state.
