Ranchi, September 3: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday warned of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) likely to hit several parts of Jharkhand between September 3 and 5.

A low-pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify within 24 hours and move west-northwestwards, crossing Odisha on its path. The monsoon trough, stretching from Rajasthan to Odisha via Jharkhand, is keeping rainfall activity active across the state.

In the past 24 hours, light to moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms lashed most districts, while isolated heavy rain was reported. Japla (Palamu) received the heaviest downpour at 78.4 mm, whereas Godda recorded the day’s highest maximum temperature at 36.7°C.

The IMD has urged residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms and heavy rain spells, warning of possible lightning strikes and strong winds.

Jharkhand’s monsoon tally so far shows a 25% surplus — the state has received 1023 mm rainfall against a normal of 815 mm this season.
