Jamshedpur, May 4: Jharkhand Health Minister Irfan Ansari on Saturday announced compensation for victims of a roof collapse at MGM Hospital in Jamshedpur, which left three people dead and others injured.
The incident occurred earlier in the day when the roof of the medicine block’s balcony at MGM Hospital — the largest government hospital in the city — gave way, trapping several people beneath the debris. Authorities confirmed that three people were killed, while the search for one missing person continued late into the night.
Minister Ansari, accompanied by state health principal secretary Ajoy Kumar Singh, visited the site late Saturday to assess the situation. In a post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, the minister expressed condolences and pledged swift action.
“I express my deep condolences on the Jamshedpur MGM Hospital accident. The tragedy caused by the collapse of a part of the building is very sad. Three people have died, the search for a body is going on. May God give peace to the departed souls, give strength to the family members,” Ansari posted on X.
The minister announced financial compensation of ₹500,000 for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured in the accident. He also convened an emergency meeting with the district administration and hospital officials, ordering a high-level inquiry into the collapse.
Ansari said strict action would be taken against the culprits within a week, adding that the government would not tolerate negligence in public infrastructure and healthcare safety.
Further investigations are underway to determine the cause of the structural failure at the hospital, which has faced repeated complaints over maintenance issues in recent years.
