Hazaribagh, November 10: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, the Mufassil police in Hazaribagh district has seized opium worth around Rs 42.5 lakh and arrested four smugglers during a raid.
Acting on a confidential information, the Hazaribagh police intercepted the accused near the Toyota showroom under the Mufassil police station area on Sunday.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Amit Anand said during a press briefing that they had received information about a planned opium deal in the area. Based on the input, a special team was formed, which immediately swung into action.
As soon as the police team arrived at the location, the suspects tried to flee however, they were quickly surrounded and nabbed.
During the search, police recovered 8.2 kilograms of opium, four mobile phones, and a pickup vehicle from their possession. The seized opium is estimated to be worth about Rs 42.5 lakh in the market.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Sachin Kumar, Rakesh Kumar, Nanku Thakur, and Ajit Dangi. During interrogation, they confessed that they were transporting the opium from Chatra district to Haryana.
An FIR has been lodged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and all the accused have been sent to judicial custody.
The raiding team included Inspector Shubhrajyoti, Station Officer Roshan Kumar, and members of the armed and technical branches.
