Ranchi, September 4: The Opposition BJP in Jharkhand on Friday announced a four-day, phase-wise protest to gherao the offices of Superintendents of Police (SPs) and Deputy Commissioners (DCs) across all 24 districts from September 8, alleging that the state government has failed to withdraw cases registered against students during recent protests.
The announcement came after a 48-hour ultimatum issued by the BJP to the Jharkhand government to withdraw the cases ended.
Jharkhand BJP president Aditya Sahu announced the protest programme at a press conference at the party’s state headquarters in Ranchi. He said BJP workers would raise the issue of cases against students and stage demonstrations outside SP and DC offices in six districts each day from September 8 to 11.
“Students’ voices will be raised through protests and gheraos across all 24 districts. The BJP will stand firmly with the students,” Sahu said.

Four-day protest schedule
According to the BJP’s programme, protests will be held in Ranchi, Dumka, Hazaribagh, Giridih, Jamshedpur and Garhwa on September 8.
On September 9, demonstrations are scheduled in Koderma, Sahibganj, Bokaro, Palamu, Simdega and Chaibasa.
On September 10, the protests will take place in Seraikela, Pakur, Dhanbad, Gumla, Latehar and Chatra.
The final phase on September 11 will cover Ramgarh, Deoghar, Lohardaga, Khunti, Godda and Jamtara.
BJP seeks withdrawal of cases, CBI probe
On September 2, a BJP delegation led by Sahu and Leader of Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly Babulal Marandi met Chief Secretary Avinash Kumar and submitted a memorandum seeking immediate withdrawal of cases registered against students during protests over alleged irregularities in examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).
The BJP has also demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged irregularities.
Sahu alleged that cases had been registered against students who were protesting peacefully and democratically. He further claimed that students in several districts were subjected to baton charges during the protests, while cases were not registered against those who allegedly assaulted them.
“Why have no cases been registered against JMM workers who engaged in hooliganism and assaulted students?” Sahu asked.
Allegations against government
The BJP state president also alleged that the Congress-JMM government was attempting to suppress student protests to prevent alleged irregularities in recruitment from coming to light.
He claimed that cases had been filed against around 1,000 students and alleged that the government was treating protesting students like criminals.
Sahu further accused the government of failing to act against alleged coal, sand and stone mafias while taking action against students.
The allegations made by the BJP could not be independently verified. The state government’s response to the latest allegations was not immediately available.
The proposed gherao marks an escalation in the BJP’s campaign over the student protests and alleged examination irregularities in Jharkhand.
